Tony Dragon's Grille

Famous… Worth it…? Tony Dragon’s Grill, NYC

We want to share a realistic and honest review of Tony Dragon’s Grill in Upper East, New York. After seeing rave reviews online and hearing word-of-mouth praise from various New Yorkers and even food bloggers, we decided to check it out - unfortunately, it didn’t live up to the hype for us.

As NYC locals, we’re always on the lookout for good, low-key spots. Whether it’s an underrated food truck, a cozy deli, or a hole-in-the-wall that serves up surprisingly great eats, we keep our expectations open but grounded.

What We Ordered

  • Veggie Burger
  • Portobello Burger

Plant-forward burgers sounded promising on paper - fresh ingredients, grilled on the spot, and described as flavorful by some online reviews. But the experience started to disappoint the moment we received our order.

A Messy Miss

The burgers were placed loosely inside a paper container - no wrapping, no foil, no paper liner, no structure at all. It honestly looked like they had been thrown in quickly and closed without a second thought. This immediately made us concerned about how we were going to eat them.

Portobello Burger

It was incredibly messy to handle. Bottom part of the bread were already soaked with the sauces, which eventually fell apart. We couldn’t pick up the burgers without sauce and fillings slipping out from the sides and bottom. Tomato slices, lettuce, and grilled mushrooms were practically spilling out of the box before we even touched them.
It felt less like receiving a meal and more like beginning a construction project - and not in a fun or rustic “DIY” sort of way.

In a city like New York where street food presentation can be surprisingly thoughtful - think foil-wrapped gyros or neatly folded burritos - this kind of loose packaging felt like a major oversight.
Especially when you’re on the go, or planning to eat in the park, a meal like this needs to be functional.

Just Okay

So how did it taste?

To be honest, it was… just okay. Not great, not terrible, but definitely not memorable.
The veggie burger especially lacked punch - it was flat in both taste and texture. The patty had that dry, over-processed vibe that didn’t hold together well, and worse, didn’t offer any contrast in terms of bite or crunch. There was little seasoning, and the overall flavor leaned bland rather than fresh.

The portobello burger fared slightly better. The mushroom was nicely grilled and had a smoky, charred flavor. But again, the execution was lacking. The sauce ratio was off - too much of one type, not enough of another - which made the flavor unbalanced and messy. At times, the bun was soggy, and other times dry.

Each burger was priced around $12–$14, which isn’t cheap for what you get, especially from a walk-up grill.
For this price point, you’d usually expect either premium ingredients or solid presentation - ideally both.

burger menu

We’ve had better burgers at food trucks, diners, and even from grocery store delis. If you’re looking for a plant-based burger experience in the Upper East Side, this wouldn’t be our top pick.

A Few Upsides Worth Mentioning

Despite our underwhelming food experience, we don’t want this to come across as a total write-off. There are a few things that Tony Dragon’s Grill does well, and those might appeal to certain customers.

Great for Takeaway (But Choose Wisely)

The location is convenient if you’re near Central Park and want a quick bite to take on a walk or to nearby parks. While we wouldn’t recommend the burgers, grabbing a meal to-go.

Other Popular Menu Items

While we stuck to the veggie and portobello burgers, we noticed that most other customers were ordering different items. The chicken over rice, lamb platters, and falafel wraps seemed to be the real stars of the menu. Those dishes were flying out of the kitchen, and the people eating them looked a lot more satisfied.

We’re willing to admit we may have just chosen the wrong things to try, and based on what we saw around us, it seems like Tony Dragon’s might actually shine more in the Middle Eastern-inspired street food category rather than the burger category. If we ever return, we’ll try something different.

Efficient QR Code Ordering

One of the better features of this spot is the ordering system. Instead of waiting in a long line or shouting over the counter, there’s a QR code system set up. It’s quick and convenient. You place your order online, and your food is usually ready within 10–15 minutes, which is great if you’re in a rush or ordering ahead.

This makes Tony Dragon’s a convenient option for locals or students nearby, especially if you’re looking for something fast without the hassle of delivery apps or long waits.

Worth the Hype?

For us? Not really.

Tony Dragon’s Grill didn’t live up to the hype we’d heard - but we’re also open to the idea that we just didn’t try their best offerings. The burgers were underwhelming, both in taste and presentation, and while the pricing was on par with other East Village spots, the value wasn’t there.

If you’re curious and want to give it a shot, we’d recommend trying the chicken or lamb platters instead. Or, ask the staff what their best-sellers are - chances are, the burgers aren’t it.

We appreciate any spot trying to offer affordable, fast meals in New York, especially in an area packed with competition. But when it comes to plant-based burgers in NYC, there are definitely better choices nearby.

TL;DR: Honest Review Summary

  • Burgers were messy, poorly packaged, and underwhelming in taste
  • Around $12–$14 per burger, not great value
  • Best suited for takeaway, especially non-burger items
  • Efficient QR code system for ordering
  • Try the chicken, lamb, or falafel platters instead

Let us know if you’ve had a different experience at Tony Dragon’s Grill — we’re always open to second chances, especially when it comes to food. But for now, we’ll be exploring other options for a satisfying veggie burger in Manhattan.
