Bunch of Seafood: A Whole Flounder on a Beautiful Plate
I recently got the cutest new plate from Fish’s Eddy- it’s beautifully patterned and just begging for something elegant to be served on it. You know how sometimes the dishware inspires the dish? That was totally the case here.
While thinking of something that would match the beauty of the plate, my boyfriend casually suggested,
“Why don’t you make something with a whole fish?”
At first, I hesitated because cooking a whole fish can sound intimidating. But then I thought, “Why not?” It turned out to be the perfect choice.
So here it is - a super simple baked whole flounder with assorted seafood, beautifully laid out on a tray. It looks fancy, but it’s honestly so easy to make. The best part? Once everything is prepped, you just toss it in the oven and let the magic happen.
The best part? Once everything is prepped, you just pop it in the oven. It takes a bit of time to cook, but it’s super easy and looks stunning.
Ingredients
- 1 whole fish (I used flounder — it’s flat and perfect for baking)
- Shrimp and octopus (or your favorite seafood)
- 1 Onion
- 1 Potato
- 1 Lemon
- 1 Green onion
- Garlic cloves
- Mushrooms (I used button mushrooms)
- Fresh rosemary
- Butter (cut into small cubes)
How to Make It
-
Thinly slice the onion, potato, and lemon into rounds. These will form the flavorful base of the dish.
-
In a large baking pan or tray, layer the potato and onion slices evenly. They’ll soak up all the delicious juices as the fish cooks.
-
Place your cleaned whole fish (flounder in my case) right on top of the vegetables.
-
Arrange the seafood (shrimp, octopus, or anything else you like) around the fish. It’s okay to get a little artistic here! Then scatter on the lemon slices, mushrooms, chopped green onion, and a few whole garlic cloves.
-
Dot the fish and seafood with small cubes of butter - this adds richness and helps everything roast nicely.
-
Finish with a few sprigs of fresh rosemary for that earthy aroma.
- Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 30 minutes. Your kitchen will smell incredible!
I just used what I had at home, but you can totally mix and match with your favorite ingredients. Salmon works great, and white fish like sea bream is super light and not fishy at all!
Tips
-
You can totally mix things up based on what’s in your fridge. Salmon works beautifully for this, and sea bream is a great mild white fish option if you’re not into strong fishy flavors.
-
Add cherry tomatoes, capers, or olives if you want more Mediterranean vibes.
-
If you don’t have rosemary, try thyme or even just cracked black pepper and lemon zest.
This dish really checks all the boxes — it’s flavorful, comforting, and makes for a gorgeous presentation.
The fish comes out tender, the seafood is juicy, and the buttery, roasted veggies underneath? Pure magic.
Plus, it’s a perfect date-night dinner idea. Just pair it with a glass of white wine (something crisp like a Sauvignon Blanc or Chardonnay), light a candle, and you’re good to go.
Simple ingredients, beautiful results - and a plate that finally got the moment it deserved.
It’s such a simple yet satisfying dish - full of flavor, looks fancy, and definitely makes dinner feel a bit more special .
